When the PlayStation 4 started, many were pleased to note the brand new embodiment of Sony’s DualShock 4 controller, mainly because it fixed many of Sony’s previous defaults and included some useful features. The Design

The new controller may have been the most shocking thing to do. In effect, since the PSOne, Sony had hardly changed the look of the PlayStation controller, this new approach surprised everyone. The Controls

With a smaller range of motion, but also with greater precision, DualShock4 analog sticks are noticeably smaller than those of its predecessor. The pressure-sensitive face buttons of DualShock 3 were revised to provide greater ergonomic performance, as can be seen from the protruding rings in thumbsticks.

Not many modifications have been made to the D-pad, as even in DualShock 3, it was almost perfect. A little bit wider than the old DualShock 4 shoulder buttons have already been redesigned to fit the new design of the controller and to produce a semi-ellipsoid form. The D-pad is a little bigger and feels much more convenient and tactile. And their pressure-sensitivity, like the facial buttons, has also been removed. The triggers were a welcome change from the DualShock 3, which triggers could not have been kept longer. The new triggers are slightly slender and curved to prevent slipping, but when held down they still don’t do that well.

The Touchpad

The DualShock 4 is the first controller ever to include a touchpad. In addition to being able to simultaneously record two touch points, the touchpad can read several gestures, although its functionality varies from game to game. In addition, a large button is actually the touchpad itself. However, it can function as two separate buttons using touch detection on the side of the touchpad. Thus, the start and select buttons in previous DualShock versions are essentially replaced.

The Speaker

Another new feature originally seen with the Nintendo Wii is an integrated mono speaker. The speaker is used mainly by playing various sounds via the controller rather than the television speaker as a means of enhanced player immersion.

The Light Bar

When the controller was first released the light bar was the source of some controversy, mainly as it could not be disabled. Like the speech speaker, it provides a certain level of dynamics in games, and PS Camera is able to collect the light so that motion is more accurate. In other words, many felt that the controller’s battery was drained unnecessarily if they didn’t take care of the above effects or had no PS camera. The light bar can still be completely dimmed today and not completely disabled.

The Gyroscope

The new gyroscope from DualShock 4 enhances the Sixaxis of the previous generation. It still uses the same technology but is much more accurate than before– especially if the PS Camera is added to the mix.

  • Extension port – Used primarily by charging stations and by some accessories.
  • 5mm jack – Used for headphones and headsets. Apart from outputting audio, it also serves as a mic input.

Further enabling wired communications was introduced by the revised DualShock 4. The controller could load with the original version via USB and could communicate via Bluetooth only to the console. Some players were concerned because of the inevitable input lag that comes with a Bluetooth connection, irrespective of how small. Even though this was not a major problem, it still had to have been a very basic function since the first day.


When compatibility with other platforms is concerned, Sony’s controllers have always been a problem. In contrast to the extremely popular Xbox 360 one, DualShock 3 was not a PC control unit, because it had no official drivers while the latter was Windows- compatible.

The Final Verdict

Altogether, the DualShock 4 isn’t a complete controller but it certainly comes close. It adds a host of useful features (although some can be used only by the PS4 itself) and is a much better designed and much more convenient controller than any of its predecessors. The DualShock 4 controller is ultimately one remarkable piece of technology which overweighs negative positive qualities.
